Proposal for Integrating Digital Product Passports into the CBAM Implementing Regulation
This document presents a proposal by the DigitalTrade4.EU consortium to integrate Digital Product Passports (DPPs) into the implementation of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) under EU Regulation (EU) 2023/956. The initiative aims to streamline reporting processes for carbon emissions on imported goods by leveraging DPPs’a digital framework designed to track product sustainability data across supply chains. By aligning with the EU’s Green Deal and Digital Europe objectives, the proposal seeks to reduce administrative burdens, enhance data accuracy, and support SMEs while advancing climate and digitalization goals. Key recommendations include optional DPP use for CBAM declarations, technical interoperability between systems, and sector-specific pilot projects. The roadmap outlines steps toward EU-wide integration, positioning the bloc as a global leader in sustainable and digital trade.
